What is a pilot watch?
A pilot watch is a watch designed to meet the specific demands associated with aviation.
There is no single model or universal set of specifications. Requirements have evolved alongside aircraft, navigation instruments and flying practices.
Nevertheless, certain principles regularly come into play:

Legibility above all
In a cockpit, time is not read in the same way as in everyday life.
A pilot watch must be readable quickly, sometimes at a single glance. The hands and markers must therefore be easily distinguishable, the indications sufficiently contrasted, and the time must remain readable as ambient light decreases.
Luminescence contributes to this requirement, as does the hierarchy of the dial.
Legibility is therefore not an aesthetic detail: it is at the heart of the design.
A watch designed around measuring time
Aviation naturally has a particular relationship with time: navigation, estimating a duration, monitoring a sequence or measuring elapsed time.

The bezel: a functional reference point
The rotating bezel is one of the elements associated with certain pilot watches.
Its principle is simple: to create a visual reference that can be positioned in relation to the dial. Depending on the model and era, it can be used to track a duration or assist with certain navigation operations.
However, not all bezels on pilot watches serve the same purpose.
At DÉDALE, the Waypoint uses a bidirectional 60-click bezel, designed as a functional element of the watch.

And what about scales?
The history of aviation watches has seen the emergence of various scales and graduation systems designed for specific uses.
However, their functions must be clearly distinguished: a graduation is not necessarily an aviation function.
At DÉDALE, the Waypoint uses a scale with a single reference marker. At once historical, versatile and an intentional design element, it leaves the wearer entirely free to define its use.

Does a pilot watch have to be automatic?
No.
The first watches used by aviators were mechanical, hand-wound watches. Automatic movements appeared later and today allow the watch to run through the movement of the wrist.
A pilot watch can therefore be hand-wound, automatic or quartz.
The choice depends on the intended use, watchmaking philosophy and desired level of technical sophistication.
At DÉDALE, the Waypoint embraces mechanical watchmaking tradition with an automatic chronoscope equipped with the TMI NE86 caliber, featuring, among other things, a column wheel and vertical clutch.
What size should a pilot watch be?
The dimensions of aviation watches have changed considerably over time.
At the beginning of the 20th century, a diameter of 37 mm could already be considered substantial. Since the 1990s, 42 to 43 mm watches have become widely established. In recent years, however, there has been a trend towards more compact dimensions.
The diameter of a pilot watch therefore depends on the balance sought between legibility, comfort, movement, functions and proportions.
It is with this approach, both rooted in history and firmly contemporary, that DÉDALE chose a 39 mm case for the Waypoint WP-01.

Is a pilot watch necessarily military?
No.
The history of aviation watches is closely linked to the military, but pilot watches have also accompanied civil aviation, navigation, air racing and flight schools.
A watch inspired by aviation is therefore not necessarily a military watch.
What matters more is the way in which the constraints and uses of flight have influenced its design.
The defining codes of a pilot watch
Over time, certain elements have become characteristic of this world:
Legibility, to allow immediate reading.
Distinct hands, to quickly identify the different indications.
Luminescence, to maintain good legibility in low-light conditions.
The bezel, when it provides a reference point or function.
The chronoscope, when it allows a duration to be measured.
Robustness and precision, which contribute to the watch's instrumental purpose.
These elements do not constitute a strict definition. Rather, they form a design language born from several generations of aviation instruments.
From the historical instrument to the contemporary pilot watch
The chronographs that have shaped the history of aviation watchmaking established the codes of the pilot watch: legibility, functionality, robustness and precision. Their influence remains today, but the requirements have evolved.
Today's pilot has access to electronic instruments that are far more comprehensive. A watch therefore no longer needs to replace cockpit instruments. It can, however, retain what made yesterday's instruments relevant: a design guided by function, legibility and mastery of time.
